Ask Yourself

Can I learn without a desk?

You are in a classroom with no chairs or desks, with dozens of other children. The teacher gives the lesson, and you need to write in your notebook.

 Your choices are:

  • lying prone on the floor

  • standing, with your book on the wall

  • sitting, with your notebook on your friends back

  • sitting, with your notebook resting in your lap

  • huddled, bent over, with your notebook on the floor

The impact of a writing surface cannot be underestimated. For generations, our most precious resource has never experienced this simple right. 95 million of our children do not have an effective writing surface.

The presence of a desk, a writing surface, a work zone, offers a structured environment. It offers a comfortable working space. It offers a space where learning can take place. In a classroom, at home, or under a tree.

We cannot expect children to learn, or even see value in a school, when they attend environments that work against instead of for them. In schools, a writing surface is an absolute necessity.
